Memphis, TN -- No. 4 seed Lindsay Davenport coasted to her second Sony Ericsson WTA Tour title of the season and the 55th of her outstanding career Saturday with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 5 seed Olga Govortsova of Belarus in the Cellular South Cup.
The 31-year-old Californian, who opened the campaign with a title in Auckland, improved her season match record to 12-2 with the one hour victory. Davenport only lost 10 games in her last four matches (and 18 for the tournament) in earning her first title in the U.S. since New Haven in August 2005.
Davenport broke Govortsova, who was appearing in his first WTA Tour final, in the first game. The former No. 1 pressured the 19-year-old almost every game, getting at least one break point in seven of her eight service games. Davenport converted five of 13 break points while never facing a break point.
"I obviously had no idea coming back what was going to happen," said Davenport, who has compiled a 25-3 record since returning to the Tour as a mother last fall. "I've been smart about my schedule and it's hard work but it's been really fullfilling."
Davenport's toughest test was a first round win (7-5, 6-3) over German qualifier Sabine Lisicki. She then cruised to the title without losing more than three games in a set.
"After I got through my first round I felt confident throughout the rest of the week," said Davenport, who tied Virginia Wade for No. 7 on the all-time singles winners list. "My draw opened up a bit with the upsets. To win here comfortably gives me confidence with the upcoming bigger tournaments where I will have to play some Top 10 players."
Since Davenport's return to the Tour as a mother last fall she has won four titles in six tournaments. She was 13-1 in the fall, winning Bali, reaching the semifinals in Beijing and capturing the title in Quebec City.
This marks the fourth time in the last seven years of the tournament an American has captured the title. Lisa Raymond won in 2002-03 and Venus Williams last year.
Govortsova came into the tournament ranked No. 49 and she will move into the Top 40 (between No. 35-40) for the first time in her career.
"I didn't serve well and it was a good experience for me in my first WTA Tour final," said Govortsova.
In the doubles final, No. 3 seeds Davenport and Lisa Raymond earned their ninth WTA Tour title together as they defeated the first-time Tour duo of Angela Haynes and Mashona Washington 6-3, 6-1 in 52 minutes. It is their first title together since Eastbourne in June 2003.
